                                      Ideas for Africa: Harnessing a Drive to Serve

                                      After a very busy fall and winter 2011, DAWN was pleasantly surprised to be featured in this State Department and Allafrica.com five-part series highlighting diaspora social entrepreneurs and organizations focused on Africa.

                                      DAWN in the Huffington Post

                                      DAWN was featured in The Huffington Post in April 2011 as one of the profiles in a feature examining the growing presence of African immigrant communities in the Nation's Capital, Washington, DC.  For the full article, click here.

                                        

                                      DAWN at the DC Africa Festival

                                      On Saturday, July 10, DAWNers and DAWNistas attended Washington DC's First Annual Africa Festival  at the Takoma Park Recreation Center in Washington, DC and were interviewed by In Focus.

                                      DAWN Executive Committee members, Founder and Executive Director Semhar Araia and Marketing Officer Tina Musoke, were featured in the February/March issue of Arise Magazine, the first global style and culture magazine dedicated to African achievement, culture, music, business and politics. 

                                      The piece, "Talkin' Bout an Evolution", covered an in-depth discussion among next generation African diaspora leaders in Washington.  The debate explored the various roles and contributions of African diaspora as well as the vast expectations and hopes for Africa's own stability and growth.

                                      DAWN in The Root's 2009 Top 100 List


                                      DAWN's founder, Ms. Semhar Araia, was named as one of The Root.com's finalists in The ROOT 100, a national list which recognizes emerging and established African-American leaders who are making extraordinary contributions. The Root chose its recipients on the basis of their leadership, creativity, service, and, excellence. 

                                      Other individuals also on this year's list include: Cory Booker, Melody Barnes, Chimimanda Adichie, Ben Jealous, Cassandra Butts, Roland Fryer Jr., Jay-Z, Dambisa Moyo, and Tavis Smiley.

                                      DAWN is honored to be associated with such an inspiring and stellar group of people.  We are extremely thankful to TheRoot.com for the recognition and support.

                                      In September 2009, DAWN was featured on Politico.com, shortly after having hosted a DAWN Networking reception, as part of Fashion Night Out in Washington, DC.

                                      DAWN on Voice of America


                                      On July 31, 2009, DAWN celebrated its second anniversary with a reception and dinner at the Africare House, in Washington, DC.

                                      DAWNers and DAWNistas gathered to commemorate the organization's accomplishments as well as recognize some of its mentors who have helped the organization and its members along the way. 

                                      The evening kicked off with an elegant reception, followed by an African-inspired dinner, DAWN memoir slideshow, welcoming remarks from the DAWN Executive Committee, and a keynote speech from our 2009 DAWN Mentor Guest of Honor, Ms. Jeannine B. Scott.
