Hear why our members love being a member of DAWN!

"I am proud to be a member of DAWN because it is a group of friendly and supportive women. I am inspired and motivated by all of the members who are excelling in their chosen professions and I am honored to be involved in the mentorship program which allows me to provide guidance to the younger generation. I also find the listerv very informative and it keeps me updated on academic-oriented events regarding Africa. I think DAWN is a wonderful organization." - Andrea

"DAWN has offered me a sisterhood on a personal and professional level that I am so thankful for. There's an enormous amount of comfort in knowing you have the support and advice of some of the most brilliant women in the African diaspora, who encourage your growth as a woman and as a leader. One example; last fall I needed a West African band in a crunch for an event at National Geographic. I sent out an SOS to my fellow DAWNERS and in hours, we had a band booked for an event happening in just a few days. I'm honored to be a part of such an phenomenal group of women." - Heather

"DAWN has made me feel like I belong to a network of women from the diaspora.  I can enter a room with more confidence knowing that I have the support of others in the room (audience or panel) and can not only call on them, but know that they will be there. This is a rare gift in a city like Washington, DC."  -  Angelique

"I joined DAWN to get to know like-minded women who had a common interest in Africa and cultural, social and political issues of the Diaspora. I have found in DAWN a supportive community of professional women, who are open to sharing experiences, ideas, and opportunities. DAWNers are always ready and willing to answer the call, the Hope for Haiti Campaign was created within 48-hours of the country's devastating earthquake, we have supported families through food and toy drives, and have participated in outreach through the SEEDS mentoring program and participation in a variety of community events. I'm proud to be a member of DAWN and encourage others to join." - Malaika

"DAWN is as close to "instant community" as is "Ben's instant rice." :)  As a newcomer in DC, I instantly felt loved, valued, and encouraged to feel comfortable and share the best of myself with my newfound sisters of the diaspora. Now, living away from DC, the regular emails and kind words always make me feel as though I have a family waiting me in the nation's capital." - Ihotu

"I love DAWN because it is an ensemble of some of the most dynamic African women in the country. I admire my DAWN sistas for their passion and commitment to African- and women-centered approaches to education, policy making, health care, and even entertainment. We have a genuine commitment to service and to building strong communities. DAWNers have such broad experiences that whether I need a mentor, the inside track on a job opportunity, the itinerary for Clinton's visit to Africa, or the name of a hot dance club in Nairobi, I can count on at least one of my DAWN sistas to come through." - Rafi
